Spotlight Breed -- The Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman "Dobie" Pinscher is one of the most beautiful guard dogs that loves their family! They're highly active; therefore, they need consistent exercise. Due to their athletic history, a brief walk once in a while will not cut it. The Dobies must receive continuous exercise where they can either walk for an extended period of time, or they need to run somewhere they're capable of reaching top speed.

Doberman's are certainly trainable, and like all dogs -- they should be trained starting at the earliest age possible. The eye-catching breed could mentally and physically suffer if not tested with an excellent training and exercise regimen.

Jogging with them would be great; however, not every dog owner either wants -- or can -- take their dog jogging. Needless to say, there are other options that includes hiring a dog-walker to take care of the exercising and socialization. Moreover, it's still vital for the family to actively participate in the life of their Doberman. That is, from kids to parents -- they all must practice training and spending time with their dog -- even if it's during a nice and peaceful walk.

History

The Doberman Pinscher originated from Germany back in the 1800s. The Dobie was developed by Louis Dobermann of Apolda, Thuringia, Germany.

There are no records, only speculation, as to the dogs which went into the creation of the original Doberman. It is felt that some of the dogs used in his breeding program were Thuringian Shepherds, early Rottweilers, early German Pinschers, and the black and tan. Additional speculation includes Great Dane, Weimaraner, German Shorthaired Pointer and Greyhound.
